I really wish you hadn't posted this - I have absolutely no need for it, yet I am struggling not to buy it right now!

    • You might not need it right now, but who knows when you might have the need to cut a small branch in future?

      • +20

That's exactly what I am telling myself!

        Imagine the scenario:

I am halfway up a tree, and a branch has just cracked, and is hanging dangerously loose.

Rather than leaving it there to fall at some point in the future, maybe tomorrow, maybe twenty years from now, just when a small child is under the branch, I pull out my hand chainsaw (which I will always carry with me from here on), cut off the branch, and save the innocent child's life.

That child then grows up to be a programmer, albeit not a great one, and forgets to 'type' a variable properly in some code, leading to the system confusing 255 with minus one, and launching a full nuclear strike against Timaru.

It doesn't bear thinking about for more than ten or fifteen minutes.

        • hahahaha!

        • Maybe just use a strongly typed language

          • @fdkflanelkfnw: Well, to be fair, I did note that the programmer was 'not a great one', so I think we can reasonably conclude that their first love, in terms of programming 'languages', was likely VBA for PowerPoint.

        • I doubt humans will be the ones still writting code in the future

    • Worth the impulse buy

  • Ignorant me, what's the use of it?

    • According to the description

Handy and portable means to cut timber out and about

    • Ignorant me, what's the use of it?

    • It's a very compact emergency saw.. it's basically a length of chainsaw blade with handles for you to manually pull the blade back and forth to cut logs.

Bought one. Adding it to the pile of stuff that I'll probably never use.

    • But but but… just imagine…

  • I bought one of these off amazon a couple of years ago, not same brand but same product. Took it camping where you're not allowed chainsaws/power saws, yep it can cut through biggish logs but takes a long time. Haven't used it since that first time…

That single use sounds worth $5.

It's a bit of a faff, but you can use these in place of a pole saw to remove higher branches while on the ground. You tie a rope to each handle, toss one rope over the branch, pull until the chain rests on the branch, then use as per usual but with the ropes instead of the handles. It's cowboy but it works alright.

I have no idea what this is for, but I just buy now and think later

Four of them tied end to end would make a very dangerous skipping rope. Probably best not to do that.

    • Good point. I'll just buy the one then.

      • Pah - four??

Make it eight, and you can use it to do double-dutch skipping!

I'm currently a foot, and three fingers down - the neighbours haven't heard so much squealing since… well, you probably all recall that other incident, so no need to repeat it here.

I use a pocket chainsaw similar to this for clearing fallen trees on tracks after snow storms.
I also use it for removing wilding pines when going on hikes in areas with wilding pines. Great for quickly ring barking a large wilding pine. Can cut down larger pines than a hand saw.
    Light and effective.

  • These pocket chainsaws or rope chainsaws are a great invention. I've trimmed a cherry tree right next to a house as they can reach many times higher than my pole saw. And best of all you won't end up like some twat on YouTube standing on a ladder with half the tree hurtling towards them and the house.

  • Now only $3

    • Regret! Just think what I could have done with the other $2!!!

      • They credited me he $2.00 difference - didn't even ask, they just emailed me to say they were crediting as the price had dropped.

        Excellent marketing!
