  • I went for One NZ option and they provide wireless 5G modem (worth $300 at least) and superwifi ($449) for FREE

    • Isn't it 4G though?

      https://one.nz/broadband/wireless-broadband/

Also "Superwifi ($449) for FREE" requires "No rental charges. As long as you stay on any eligible One NZ broadband plan for 24 months, we’ll cover the cost of the units. "

      • You need to click the arrow, then 5G for $79 but I paid for $69 as my mobile is with One NZ ($10 discount)

    • One is $65pm for 4G at my address (or $92 for VDSL)

      • Wouldn't Starlink be a better option at that point instead of VDSL?

        • Unlimited Wireless 5G is cheaper than Starlink for similar or better speeds.
Starlink is better for wherever you can't get 5G or its super congested meaning you get crappy af speeds
Lag is about the same for both being around ADSL pings

  • FYI the $60 plan gives you 333/48 speeds

    • Woops didn't realize that there was another page

  • Just be aware that the speeds are national averages, and if you happen to be on a heavily loaded tower your results may be slower. Conversely, you might get a real bargain if you are on a tower with spare capacity.

  • How does internet over the mobile network compare to Fibre?
Is there a technical limitation that puts one over the other?

I'm assuming when using the mobile network, your signal, internet will share a tower with all the phones in the area.
And Fibre, which is usually one per household, you will only share connection with people in the household.

Although both will have the same amount of total bandwidth assuming the same number of users and usage.

I don't really know the technical side so am just assuming some things, but I know a lot of members here are versed in network speak so thought to ask anyway.

      Slower basically:

      HyperFibre > Fiber > Cable > Wireless Broadband 5G > VDSL > Wireless Broadband 4G > ADSL2 > ADSL

      • Dialup? Was that pre ADSL?

        • Yea, thought it doesn't exist anymore does it?

          ADSL > 56K DialUp > 28.8k DialUp

          • @Huntakillaz: Looks like we haven't been able to for a few years now unfortunately.

              @Kiwi: Why's it unfortunate? 🤣

Don't think anyone would want to use it these days
Can you imagine how long it would take a pages to load with how much bigger images and media is as well as the butt ton of ads 😂

              • @Huntakillaz: Ha, but… nostalgia! I actually thought about that how long it would've taken. Most browsers have the ability to throttle your speed through dev tools, it took about 1 minute for this page to load uncached.

          • @Huntakillaz: Spare a thought for those who started at

115 Baud Single Duplex as their first modem.

Like you answer ( not kiwi's as he always goes on a tangent about dial up n things lol ).

lot depends on strength of the radio signal, coverage, can be affected by proximity of the property to the tower. and any obstacles.

          🤣

    • Theres some detailed info on 4G and fibre in the Measuring Broadband New Zealand Report, but unfortunately nothing on 5G yet

  • Slingshot has a similar deal atm, as far as I can tell the only difference is slingshot is $1 cheaper, u get prime instead if Netflix (and only 6 months) but sont have to buy a modem

    • It shows as $60 when I check and is only 4G, no mention of Prime either so is there a deal link?

      • My mistake i meant 2 degrees (smoke alarm went off half way through writing so got distracted)

      • Just make sure you get 5g network where you intend to put your router. Else it will go down to 4g connection. Interference in home can be tricky.
