0 fee and 150 cashback, what a fantastic deal!

  • what's an eligible purchase though?

    • Often it is just non cash withdrawals etc but will see what is said..

    • Usually any purchase in store and online.

  • Is there any drawback to opening multiple credit cards in terms of how your credit looks for things such as home loans? I’ve got an Amex that I always pay off in full each month, but might get this purely for the freebie.

I believe it will be seen as a liability valued at whatever the credit limit is, regardless of whether or not you fully repay it or not.

I'm guessing the idea is that while your card is active and you get a loan, nothing is stopping you from maxing your credit card afterwards and then have difficulty paying it all off.

You can always check your credit score for free here:
      https://www.creditcheck.illion.co.nz

The score don't really mean that much though. It's just a reference for the lenders to check if you have bad history or anything. I mean, as long as your score is above a certain threshold, it should be fine. My score isn't great but that's only because I have several mortgages and 3 credit cards, but I've never had difficulty getting a huge loan approved with any bank.

    • Yes, it will impact on the loan amount you receive, at least it is for me.

      • yeah this - because there is no way for a lender to predict/know whether you are going to pay off the entire balance (which could be up to the max limit on each card) or not, so the worst is assumed (ie everything is already maxed out).

    • Depend on your credit card limit.

Confirming what everyone else has said re: it affecting your borrowing capacity.

I had 4x credit cards/store cards (Q Card), never paid a cent in interest as always paid off in full and made use of interest free periods. Despite this, had to close them all for a mortgage application otherwise it would’ve impacted what’d they’d lend (if only they looked into how I actually used them!).

Wish I could take advantage of this deal too!

  • dang, even better deal than this - https://www.cheapies.nz/node/43644

    I should have waited, lol.

    • Consider getting both? This card has a super small limit min 500.

Interesting, quite similiar to some of the cards Commonwealth Bank (ASB's parent company) offers in Australia.

Certainly going to disrupt the market.

  • I see this card doesn't offer any rewards, is it still worth getting just to use it as a debit card?

    • I bet most of us here are getting it for the bonus and most likely would cancel it at some point in future later on.

    • +1

I feel like the benefit is the low interest rate. That’s cheaper than some personal loans/car loans.

If only this one was similar to their Lite card - 6 months interest free on all purchases more than $1000.

  • I had a different asb Visa and decided to swap to this card for the deal, took like 20 seconds through the app.

Hmmm the number stays the same though so I wonder if I'll get the 50 for adding to google pay as old one was already on it. Guess I'll try removing it and adding it back

    • Was it a platinum? I tried this and the flex didn't show as an option.

      • Nah was light

    • "No bonus cashback offers are available for product transfers from an existing ASB credit card"

      • Really? Ah that sux.

        • ASB rly trying to get me to product transfer instead of cancelling 😂

      • what if i get a 2nd card and keep my existing one? is that consider product transfer?

        • +1

          That should work

      • what is a produc transfeR?

        • Turning one kind of credit card (e.g. Visa Light) into a different kind of card (e.g. Visa Flex)

      • I cancelled my Visa Light and going to apply this card a couple days later. I guess I am eligible for the bonus?

        • Yeah should work

  • Previously I found it almost impossible to signup to a ASB CC if you are self employed. They want all sorts of information and also your income details for the year, which you often can't provide if your accountant hasn't done this years accounts. IMO it isn't worth the time and hassle for the small amount you get back.

If it takes an hour or so to sort 150 bucks an hour aint bad!

Just looking at this - looks like I can use this instead of the wise card:

Zero fees - that includes no account fee or foreign currency conversion charges (Offshore Service Margin

Just tried to apply and after putting in every last detail they need it said this service is currently unavailable and to try again later.

But my details are all still there, so that's something at least.

    • +1

I got that too. Thought it was just me!

      • I had another look an ended up calling ASB - it's not the system being down but a validation problem with the form.

They're gonna call me back and advise how I apply

        • How did you go? Considering signing up but this sounds a bit painful.

          • @snofil: You can apply via the App once you have your account setup - that was painless

          • +1

@snofil: Still waiting for them to call me. The app has the same issue

            • @crimson: They called me very quick. Like next day

            • +1

@crimson: Called again, got booked for an appointment for someone to call me next week and discuss

  • sorry guys what does this mean?

Receive a bonus $50 cashback when an eligible purchase of any value has been made for the first three consecutive statement periods, and the full statement balance has been repaid in full on or before the statement due date.

    what is statement period

    • +3

When you sign up you will get asked what date you want the statement to be.

Every month you get a statement from asb. That's a statement period

  • Holy hell the amount of extra information you need to provide. It was like I had my own personal banker calling me every day to ask me more questions. He was a nice guy but 4x phone calls (one a day) was a bit much. Be prepared to send in 3 months bank statements and then be quizzed on all the transactions.

    • quite standard since CCCFA from memory. I've never gotten quizzed much though, likely as all my spending is on american express, which don't seem to show up on most credit check providers that banks use.

    • I get frustrated when I’m declined because I’m good with money and have a good credit score.

    • Sheesh, I am going through this myself right now.

Not only do I have to provide 3 months bank statements/payslips, but also a statement per tranche of my home loan, including the the tranches that have been fully paid off and are no longer available to me via the web portal.

All for a card with a $500 limit.

Approaching the point of not worth it haha.
