  • Are you able to order this successfully? I heard there were issues wit the AU site ship to NZ, was that resolved?

    • +1

      Resolved now. No issues ordering.

  • a great player,
FYI they have deployed the bullshit new google launcher update to NZ, so you will get ads.

you can replace the launcher however.

  • Second this, seriously good player. Especially if you have a lot of offline content at home. Otherwise the new AppleTV4K is also a great alternative.

    • Or Google TV.

All I want is fire tv 4k max to ship to nz. I'll watch all the ads bezos wants

    • FireTV 4K is the sweet spot between functionality, performance and cost.My original version played 4K(HDR and TrueHD) remuxes without any issues while the latest GoogleTV struggles with anything above 80 Mbps.

Shield 4K Pro is an overkill even for 4K Plex content.

      • Indeed. I've been using a FireTV 4K for the past few years, and love it. Hasn't struggled with any content so far.

      • I have remuxes that Shield sometimes struggles - so not really an overkill if you have the content.

      There is a guy selling a 4k max wifi 6 on the marketplace,$90, auckland/massey

    • It's on TradeMe if you're really desperate.

  • Does anyone have an opinion if this unit would make a good replacement for a soon to be forced into retirement Vodafone TV device? Are there any native/installable apps for it that will provide live Freeview TV over wifi?

    • +1

It's an expensive replacement, but definitely would do the job.

We discussed it in the Vodafone TV thread: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/31094 the same applies to this as to the CWGTV, so just have to get the APK and sideload it.

      • Legend mate, thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ll have a look at that thread now. Item is showing temporarily OOS @Amazon, but I was still able to order one at this price anyway so I but the bullet. Seems like a good deal!

    • This would be miles ahead of Vodafone TV but yea much more expensive (vs maybe VTV box was free?). Sweet spot as someone else mentioned Firestick 4K or the original apple tv 4k for 200 is a great option.

      • I think I paid $99 (or maybe $79) for it on a promo mid-year 2020. I had an Apple TV in the past (pre 4K) which I found frustrating to use in terms of the locked down ecosystem (I love Apple generally but this was too restrictive for my external library). VFTV served a good purpose of being relatively well featured and easy to use, but it was only a bedroom unit. I use my Xbox One X as my streaming/media server in the lounge.

If you have offline content, Shield is seriously the best IMHO..

  • Listing is saying “Temporarily out of stock” but they’re still accepting orders at this price. I’ve ordered one, will see what happens I guess…

    • Now says “Currently Unavailable” so probably best to adjust this cheapie to “expired”.

One of the best tech purchases I've ever made. Got the 2017 version in my bedroom and the 2019 in my lounge.

  • I've been wondering where the weak point is in my local content streaming setup. I have a Raspberry Pi 4b (4gb RAM) setup to handle downloading content to my NAS. I have Emby running on the Pi that I use to cast to my Chromecast Ultra. This setup really struggles with large 4K movies even with everything hardwired at 1Gbit. Would the Shield Pro 4K be a step in the right direction? I don't know a lot about video file formats I only know that any file over 20Gb usually has to buffer constantly, I've read that it could be because the Chromecast Ultra doesn't support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound? So despite the files direct playing to the Chromecast it still has to do some work in order to play the file. I realize this isn't really a question for cheapies but it seems like there are some people here that could answer this question. Thanks in advance.

    • Someone else will answer better as i have no experience with the Shield , but it will most likely be the Pi not being able to transcode large files/4k, try small 1080p Films if that works fine then its the Pi.
it would be better to use a skylake or greater intel pc/Nuc with intel quicksync for a nas/server for files that large- like this https://www.cheapies.nz/node/31247.

Edit - i sold all my chromecasts and got the newest one so i can run apps directly off it and i use kodi to direct play large files instead.
      https://1-day.co.nz/products/google-chromecast-with-google-t…

    • I can confirm the Shield pro handles 4k remux like a champ. I use kodi for local files and syncler for real debrid.

  • I use a jerry-rigged alternative for remote gaming via LAN:

    • Chromecast with Google TV
    • Miracast or similar app on Google TV
    • USB Type C hub with Ethernet and PD (30W)
    • PS4 controller (or any other bluetooth controller)
  • Another “I know this isn’t the place, but….” comment, but… 😏

As a complete novice in the android tv streaming space, where would you legends recommend I go to learn the ropes and get the most of my new shield purchase? (Assuming it comes back into stock and actually ships, that is…)
    TIA! 😊

    • Awesome, thanks team!

To set up Aussie and NZ TV channels, I recommend https://www.matthuisman.nz/ he has a step by step procedure for setting up on Kodi.
