  • Interesting. When I did a full online search of Dick Smith "on sale" items yesterday it didn't show up, but I just realized according to the website it's not "on sale"

  • Stores also have cheap ink, I think it was mentioned in another deal? Seemed to be $2 for all the Calidad (third party) inks - managed to pick up many sets for my free Canon printer for $10. The OEM inks marked down appeared to be for older printers only

  • I managed to find a 10 dollar A3 Laminator and shredder in store. Thanks for the tip!

    • How did you get the $20 off in the fourth to last line?

    • Thanks Shaw. I've purchased one of the Toshiba external drives using click and collect, hopefully the collect part goes smoothly. Seems like a pretty good deal, I'm surprised they haven't sold out.

      • So am I, maybe they have a bit of stock out the back, as they aren't necessarily being dumped at rock bottom prices, but it's an awesome price for a 2TB.

        • My order was cancelled today.

        • @Sam91:

Ahh that sucks! Mum went and picked mine up today and there were only issues with the paper I got, the rest of the stuff was fine.

        • @Shaw: Nice! I ordered quite some time after the deal was posted, so I'm not surprised. I guess they had sold out, but the click and collect system didn't update to show it.

        • @Sam91:

Ordered mine Saturday, confirmed on Sunday, picked up today.

The benefit of family in Levin I guess lol

  • Crayola case seems out-of-stock, 404 when searching it, but if you add it to cart from the search there is none available for click & collect.

  • a lot of items are getting pulled when I click to go through. i.e All gaming is now removed… any risk they are shutting down and no chance of us getting our money back?

    • any risk they are shutting down and no chance of us getting our money back?

There is always that risk, with any retailer.

I can't see it happening this year, just click and collect, go pick your stuff up when it's ready.

I heard they are going out of gaming, maybe they are refining their product lines to be more niche.

      • not just gaming, quite a few sections have been removed. I know as I looked last night to see what I could spend $20 off $100 on. Looks like they dropped prices on a lot of things and removed a lot of products from the site.

        • Yeah they are removing things from the site when they are sold out, rather than marking them as out of stock. As they are heavily reduced clearance items there is no point for them to put it as out of stock as they aren't going to sell them again. Nothing to worry about, just confusing for us as it often displays in search but can't actually add to cart etc. Happened with the sound bar and Crayola phone case in this post and been dealing with it on the Aus site all week, someone posts a deal and then an hour or two later the page is deleted.

    • if you paid via credit card, and not received the item, apply for a chargeback through your bank/credit card company (to get your money back)

  • Such an utterly bizarre way of destocking. So random and erratic. Such a lucky dip trying to get anything. Was after (always after more storage) external hard drives, but only available in store, hundreds of kms away. Don't understand why some things can be freighted, others cannot, some only online, some only instore. Again, bizarre and ultimately damaging to their reputation. Difficult to see how they can recover or if this is some stange way of going out of business. Would love to here the insider gossip of why all this is happening.

    • Go check their share price mate, tells the story well.

      http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&o…

      • Great article. Learnt that lesson, the hard way. Seemed expensive at the time. But valuable in the long run. Could have been much worse if hadn't got fingers burnt early in the game.

Even more dodgy is the rise of crowdfunded equity 'investments'( via Snowball, Pledgeme etc). Targets the inexperienced and ill informed. Legislative requirements are so lax, placing all the risk in the Caveat Emptor category for those with the least skill base to see beyond the frothy marketing hype. Capitalises on the good will and ignorance of inexperienced, but without the protections of corporate investments and due diligence.

Financial disasters in the making but because it targets mostly small non-commercial investors, no-one really cares. Seen some incredibly bad deals being presented with great gusto and enthusiasm. An Emperor's New Clothes kind of experience, looking around the room, thinking, 'Surely no-one is actually believing this crap', with unsubstantiated valuations etc etc.

        • Seemed expensive at the time. But valuable in the long run.

It often works out that way, where at the time it does seem shattering, but the amount that you save from the experience, is more valuable than the cost.

Yea, it is so easy to promise promise promise, but when it comes time to deliver, the people, money, products, all gone.

What happens to DS though, remains to be seen. It's going to take a massive amount of work to build the company up from scratch, and whether the investors deem that worthwhile or not, will ultimately decide.

        • @Shaw: Yep, but still don't understand the logic behind this random Fire Sale. Even though the company may have been over-valued, these individual products are not. Selling them at way under cost makes little sense. Prices so reduced that even the extra cash wouldn't be enough to show a flush of funds.

Trying to remember which whitegoods/electronics company (Noel Leemings?) bought out another similar coy and rebranded a couple of years ago. They sold off a lot of electronics in a short space of time at discounted prices. Some good buys but it was done in a much more organised (& advertised) manner, getting maximum value for the goods in quick turnover.

Can't see the sense in the DSE scenario. Have to track around a few DSE's tomorrow, picking up online purchases. Should be interesting.

        • @Jay:

Yea, none of it makes sense. Even Gerry Harvey (Arch nemesis of bargain hunters) was confused about it, not that that's particularly hard to achieve.

Just reading the Anchorage Capital DS page, they are so proud of their con job too.

At the end of the day, as consumers, this is the best time to stock up on consumables and other junk, how the company justified the way they are doing it isn't really going to become public knowledge.

          What'd you manage to get?

I'm kind of glad I wasn't in NZ for this, would have wasted money on stuff I'd never use, like a new TV, or a laptop.

        • @Shaw: Nothing flash, just consumables and storage. We keep things fairly simple. Met a wealthy man a few years ago who didn't believe in owning 'stuff'. Didn't buy the yacht, just leased one for a month or two when he needed one. Had an amazing nomadic lifestyle without being anchored by owning too much stuff. Always admired that creative frugality without unnecessary austerity.

        • +1

          @Jay:

Yea, that's fair enough, some prefer it that way, others prefer that whole "I own this" feeling, however futile that may be towards material possessions.

          Interesting read here too.

        • @Shaw: Epic link! Thanks

        • @Jay:

          All good!

        • @Shaw: Re Stock adjustments mentioned.

Curiously, was sitting in a car waiting for someone, a couple of weeks ago. To the rear of a well known chain store.

Watched for thirty minutes, two staff members unwrapping what seemed new goods from boxes, smashing them with a hammer and throwing into a dumpster.

Crockery, blenders, and other kitchen goods etc. Couldn't make sense of it at the time. Think if nothing else, surely they could have given the stock away to local charity groups. More corporate madness.

        • @Jay:

Met a wealthy man a few years ago who didn't believe in owning 'stuff'

It was Warren Buffett, isn't it??

      • I think there's a chance Dick Smith may quit the NZ market altogether. There's an AMA with a ex-store manager at the Ozbargain forums and he mentioned that the NZ operation is a drag because of too much competition.

        • I linked to that above :)

I'm not sure if they will, not yet anyway. Maybe they will try to roll out organisation wide changes, I mean, what do they have to lose? Their investments are already worthless.

        • @Shaw: I think all the local retailers (both DSE and others like JB/HN/NL) will take a beating because of this fire-sale event, which happened right before Christmas. Quite a few people will have their Christmas gifts sorted, and many items will almost certainly end up on Trademe.

Christmas is traditionally a full-price, high-margin trading period for retailers. Walmart-owned Asda, which brought Black Friday to the UK last year, tried to coax the genie back into the bottle this year because they realised that their margins got hammered because of that event.

        • @Avantime:

No doubt about it, they will all lose a massive amount of income because of it, but it is what it is really, it's done now. Will be interesting to see how DS go about things into the new year. Competition is always a good thing, but it still had to be competitive, and if they aren't going to be, they may as well just pack up and go.

Asda, isn't that the "low cost" supermarket? I think I remember shopping there a few times when I was over there, prices similar to that of Aldi. From what I saw on HUKD, they didn't do a very good job.

        • Interesting read from Shaw's link re DSE - private-equity-heist

        • @Jay:

Yea, remember reading that the other day, very interesting analysis.

Most clearance sales are in-store only because:

      1) They can't be bothered to list them online, especially display/used stock (Remember the Consumer Guarantees Act)
      2) In-store sales drive foot traffic, and opportunities for staff to upsell stuff like extended warranties. Also a lot of people end up buying more than they originally intended.
      3) Inventory systems are not accurate. The computers may show 1 item in stock but there's a chance it's missing.

      • I'm actually worried that I won't receive my click to collect orders as staff probably haven't even bothered to put the stock aside and instead sell it.

        • I've just had a text to say my click and collect order is ready - hopefully it will be there! On the other hand, the ex demo samsung galaxy s4 I bought yesterday has a battery that looks swollen and turns off after less than a minute. Sigh, guess I'm going back in there today…hopefully they have a replacement battery.

        • @inkypinky: You might be lucky and get upgraded if they decide to try replace it.
I really hope my order for the tab wireless keyboard doesn't get cancelled because out of all the cheap junk i bought, it's the only thing I actually need.

        • @Toddy47:
Went to the New Lynn store this afternoon; they said I had to go back to the Manukau store where I had bought it from. They don't stock spare batteries and they have to send it back to Samsung…boo! Will try to argue the point but don't know how far I'll get. Two of the three LEd bulbs I ordered were there to collect which was good.

        • @inkypinky: What about the third one, is it still coming via store transfer? S4 is now a few years old so maybe Samsung don't stock the spare parts, you might get upgraded to an S5.

        • @Toddy47: Fingers crossed on the upgrade! How jammy would that be, an s5 for $280. They refunded me for the third bulb :)

        • +1

@inkypinky: Went into Botany and asked them what was up with my click + collect orders, all had been cancelled including my keyboard which was for delivery…

        • +1

          @Toddy47: Oh that sucks. Commiserations.

        • @Toddy47:

They took my money already, yet my order for the 2tb Canvio is still processing WTF dude

As mentioned from someone here already, try to avoid online sales and only pay for item in-store and in-stock…

        • @footy7: Yeah, have that issue with one of my orders. Been days since paid for etc. Tried calling CS yesterday morning but was told their whole computer system was offline and they were unable to access their order system for '30-60 mins'. The promised return call never eventuated. Will try again today.

        • Postscript. Wasted lots of time trying to deal with the Asian DSE call centre, unreturned callbacks etc. Eventually was told, several days after money was debited, that the order had been cancelled due to lack of stock. Given a lecture about checking that stock was available before placing a C&C order. Which is BS, since you cannot place a C&C without doing exactly that.

Gave up on the call centre and went direct to the store manager of the pickup store. He then confirmed the original order and identified that there actually was still stock available. He's put the stock aside, confirmed that the original money collected was being refunded, and that when I pickup, they'll charge me the original deal price. Gotta give him full credit for making it right in the end.

Lots of runaround, but persistence pays off.

        • @Jay: At-least it has worked out for you. I agree their system is shit, it appears they can cancel the order at store level but it doesn't update the website status; instead staying at "being processed". I am told that the refunds automatically come through after 3 days, but not confident on that, especially since they can't even provide a cancellation notice.

        • @Toddy47: re my s4 - they gave me the battery from the other demo phone they had. Customer service could be described as….less that enthusiastic ;)

        • @inkypinky: I wonder what happens to that demo phone? They wouldn't try sell it at the same clearance try would they? But then again DSE isn't exactly the place where you'd expect them to half the price because it's missing a battery, otherwise you could pick up a nice deal and buy a replacement battery from Ebay.

        • @Toddy47: Squeaky wheels and all that. Contact the manager of the click and collect store and see what can be done.

My line was that once DSE debited the payment from my account, they had entered into a legally enforceable supply contract with me. They have no legal authority to cancel the order, after accepting payment.

Once the contract has been established, they have to supply said item or negotiate an alternative outcome. I told them, I didn't care if they had to pop down the road and buy one from Harvey Norman and give me that. Didn't care where they got it from. Not my problem.

You guys accepted the contract. Now fulfil it or remediate. So they chose to satisfy the original contract, and get rid of the annoying old bastard Take No Prisoners :-)

        • +1

@Jay: I got 'dicked' around by DSE staff with my C&C order as well. Purchased 2 Panasonic LED light bulbs (Both in bayonet fit, warm white) from the Newmarket store, and went there to collect when they were ready for pickup. I then watched staff pick up my order from the aisles - meaning they never actually put stock aside for C&C orders.

Staff gave me a screw fit warm white bulb, and a bayonet fit cool daylight bulb. I rejected the cool daylight bulb and I had to go to the Albany store to pick up a replacement bulb, as I was passing through the area on my way to Orewa. Once I got to Albany the staff there couldn't find the bulb (Newmarket staff called earlier and confirmed stock) until I pointed out that they were hidden in the back of the display stand.

        • @Jay:

You likely agreed to some terms of sale which allow them to opt out in specific situations(ie stock error in their system), think you are being pretty unreasonable myself even if it was a good deal.

        • @Teckiwi: Don't see the unreasonable part but won't argue the toss.

          1. DSE Advertise the availability of product = 'Invitation to Treat'

          2. You need to do a stock check when confirming the C&C order. They say Yes we have stock now, at this price = 'Binding Offer'

          3. Accept T&C's, provide payment details etc = 'Notice of Intention to Accept the Offer'

          4. Full and ocmplete payment. By that action, Seller indicates acknowledgement of the offer acceptance, and the contract is established Buyer fulfils purchase side of the contract. (Consideration)

          5. Seller is then required to provide Consideration (the goods) to the buyer. All pretty straight forward.

There is some argument as to when the contract is commenced in relation to online deals. Even prepayment, a contract can be said to be established, provided the condition of payment is reasonably expected to be pending. However once the payment has been made and recorded, it is very clear cut. There is no further doubt that a contract has been established.

        • @Jay:

What gets me is that, in this case, unlike in the Harvey Norman furniture fiasco, they actually have to confirm the stock is available and the purchase is correct. Crazy.

        • @Shaw: They got away with that because legally, Harvey Norman was at the 'Invitation to Treat' stage of the process.

The 'shopfront' is not a 'Binding Offer' Invitation to treat is just saying, "We're thinking about selling this. Would you be interested in it at say, this price?"

        • @Toddy47: Spent last night transferring all my data, contacts etc from my old phone - only to find that as soon as anything is required of the new phone it switches itself off mid-task. Back to DSE tomorrow to get my money back and start again with finding a new phone. Whoops, posted this in the wrong comment stream.

      • From what I've seen in the stores today, staff are all a little too shell-shocked to worry too much about upselling etc. They don't seem to have much of an idea of what's happening either. Some talk about containers of new stock arriving in a week but they don't know what.

        • Saw Botany receive a shipment of 3-4 cartons today. staff opened it up and were like "wtf?" More shitty overpriced move cables.

        • Although, depending on how long ago they decided to clear stock out, they are likely to have shipments booked 4-6 weeks in advance.

    PS3 - Heavy Rain $5
    PS3 - Motorstorm Apocalypse $5
    Panasonic LED lightbulbs, E27 and B22 - $5 each
    7" Hot Wheels DVD Player - $20
Saw this one yesterday and didn''t think much of it, but now have just seen it can play from USB or SD card, not just DVD's.
    Philips Body Groom Essential $20

    • I was trying to buy the 7" Hot Wheels DVD Player - $20 last night but it keep disappearing from cart when trying to view so have to guess no stock left.

  • thanks - I needed to log in - I tried to reset my password numerous times last night but it didn't work, this morning it did. Gutted I missed the extra $20 off when you spend $99 now though

  • Just a warning on the 7" Hot Wheels DVD Player - $20 - I just seen one in store and it didn't have a built in battery, clearly stated on the box. The stock online seems to be newer with a built in battery though.

    • This seems correct, the stock @ Sylvia Park near the front did not include any built in battery, but the stock in the locked cabinet did. Both Hot Wheels branded.

  • The above links don't work anymore?

    • An awful lot of links preceding your post, so you are going to have to be more specific. If it is in relation to one of the DSE offers, once the item is sold out, the relevant page is taken off the DSE site and you'll get a 404 type message. Luck of the draw in that case. Sometimes they find more stock and the offer becomes live again.

  • Got a $10 laptop bag. Pretty good quality.

  • +1

Pathetic. dick smith were happy to take my money and then turns out there is no stock on the light bulbs

    • Yes - I believe they don't do the internet orders until the end of the day, and by then the stock is likely to have sold.
I've found the ebst way is to find a store with stock, get them to put it aside then pay for it from another branch, that way they cannot sell it and have to keep it aside until you pick it up.

What light bulbs you after? I have a bunch of brand new Philips LED bulbs.

      • philips led bayonet warm. had ordered 4 of them.

        • I'll have to check but I am sure I have a box of new Philips LED B22 but they are likely cold white and 6w. I'm sure I can sell some to you for $5.

        • @Toddy47: what does 6 w equal in standard wattage brightness?

        • +1

@gregclarke: I'll have to double check the bulbs as I may be thinking of the E27 bulbs I have. 6w is usually around 50w incandescent but I should have some 9w ones too.

        • @Toddy47: bump

  • There's still deals to be had guys. Managed to get a Samsung bluetooth keyboard from Sylvia Park after my previous mess around and a Iphone 5s lifeproof case for $1.

    • Interesting the iPhone 5s lifeproof cases are now marked down. They didn't seem to be last Thursday when I picked up a bunch of 4/4s models. Might be worth a look in some of the Wellington stores.

      • Yeah, it wasn't marked or anything I just remembered from your post you mentioning lifeproof so i got the guy to scan it. He was one of the guys who says "What does the price tag say?", he was quite surprised he even went out back to check if the price was correct.

        • Hmmm thought I was done shopping but might have to pop back in.

To be clear, the lifeproof cases i've picked up i've been reselling because I went a little crazy with picking them up (One of those people) - i'm surprised people on TM are paying between $50-75 for them when iPhone 4's are probably only worth $200 or so these days.

        • +1

@asmcar: Wow. I saw a Iphone 4 Lifeproof case as Sylvia yesterday so it might still be there, I thought it was practically worthless. I'm amazed Iphones retain their value so well, you would think with most upgrading yearly there would be a whole bunch of old ones in the market.

        • +1

          @Toddy47:

I thought i'd end up stuck with them too - but the minimum i've sold the cases for was $50 so worth picking up.

I got a Panasonic Viera 50" LED Full HD tv (TH-50A400Z) for $400 today.

    • Nice, at-least 60% off. Display or new?

      • Thanks, yeah it's a display model. Apparently it's a year old. It still had the standard $999 sign next to it. There was no mention of it being a clearance item. According to their system it was a clearance item, so it pays to ask.

By the way, I noticed that they mentioned the sale in their email mailer today. It's the first time I've seen anything official from Dick Smith regarding this sale.

  • We've moved on from the 48hr Xmas Sale to the 24hr Mega Clearance. Looks to be all the same product.

    • 48hr Xmas Sale to the 24hr Mega Clearance.

You'd probably get away with adding an extra 0 to those numbers, might reflect the true length of their sales.

    • And it's worth noting that some of these prices don't match with what I've seen instore. This GPS watch was $99 instore yet $217 online

      http://www.dicksmith.co.nz/hot-deals/garmin-forerunner-15-la…

  • Careful with online orders, I am still waiting on my DVD player I ordered on Monday. I am doubting I will get it. Wonder if they will refund the $10 shipping if I don't get it as wouldn't of payed that to ship a couple of batteries. They have sent the batteries in 3 separate packages on different days with signature required so if I get my full order it will be four separate packages which is just crazy.

Looking at their Facebook page seem lots of orders are not going out. Also they put a hold on my card for $51 and then charged $51 leaving the hold on.
